Shirley Mae (House) Coffman passed away at her home in Hector, Arkansas on December 10, 2023.

She was born  on September 19, 1937 in Miami, Oklahoma to George and Elizabeth (Harrison) House. She graduated from Crooked Oak High School in Oklahoma in 1956 and shortly after married the love of her life, the blue-eyed boy from Hector, Arkansas, Eugene Coffman. While they raised their three children in Hector, Arkansas, she raised her children to understand she was “Sooner born, Sooner bred, and when I die I’ll be Sooner dead.”

The Oklahoma Sooners were a passion of hers and she rarely missed the Sooners softball or football games when televised.

Shirley worked for almost three decades at the Firestone Tube Co. in Russellville, where she was respected by her peers for her dedication and management style. With her hard work and determination, she broke barriers as a female manager. Occasionally when told by a male worker that he just couldn’t work for a woman, her quick response was, “Well, it’s a good thing you don’t work for me.”

When Firestone was bought by Bridgestone, which was based in Japan, Shirley not only got to know many of those working abroad from Japan, but she took classes and became fluent speaking Japanese. When she traveled to Tokyo for a board meeting, she was undoubtedly one of the first females to sit in the boardroom as a manager. She always cherished her lifelong friendships that she made with her coworkers and friends at Firestone – including Marie Needham, Donna Grice, Sharon Kemp, and so many others. She met with them for monthly lunches until she wasn’t able to drive.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Eugene Coffman, her mother and father, Elizabeth and George House, and her sister Wanda Seaberry. She is survived by her children, Pamela Coffman Magness, Mark Coffman, and Susan (Max) Chesser and her grandson who was her pride and joy, Eli Chesser. She is survived by many nieces and nephews that she adored. She was affectionately known by her family as Memaw and without question, this was the favorite job she ever had.

Shirley enjoyed genealogy and researching her Cherokee roots. She updated many of the family records on Ancestry.com for House/Harrison/Liston/Coffman. When she was born, her family lived in Douthat, Oklahoma – a town that no longer exists due to collapse from mining.

When she was a teen, Shirley attended a Billy Graham crusade in Oklahoma City, where she went forward and became a lifelong Christian. After moving to Hector, Arkansas, she became a member of the Hector Freewill Baptist Church, but also attended the Hector First Baptist Church.

When she was 16 years old, she attended an Elvis Presley concert. When asked if she screamed, she wouldn’t answer, but she did not deny it either. Her early career at the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce allowed her to meet many interesting people, including the actors of Gunsmoke – Matt Dillon, Festus, and others.

Family was the most important thing to her. She modeled her mother, who was her biggest influence because she was always there and cared, saying her mother gave up a lot for her kids. And she did as well.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Lemley Funeral Home in Atkins, Arkansas. There will be a visitation preceding the service at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Hector, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Mcclean, Chris Freeman, David Booker, Johnny Shinn, Tim Clifford, and Danny Crow. The service will be officiated by pastors Stephen Davis and Ira Taylor. Ricky Pruitt will sing some of her favorite songs, In the Garden and Beulah Land.
